In an effort to save the imperiled health-care bill, Democrats cut a tentative deal with organized labor that would exempt unionized employees from an excise tax on high-cost healthcare plans. Of the many unsavory bargains and rotten deals that have characterized the rush to get this thing passed (the “Louisiana Purchase,” the “Cornhusker Kickback,” etc.), the “Labor Loophole” surely takes the prize.
Cinema possesses a rich history of collaboration between artists of sound, narrative, and image. However, traditional tendencies to perceive music as a strictly supportive background or accompaniment have been subjected to in-depth critique only recently. Abigail Childs interactions with musicians in Is This What You Were Born For? (1981-89) and Bill Morrisons partnership with composer Michael Gordon in Decasia (2001) exemplify (but by no means exhaust the possibilities of) the broader range of collaborative textures that cinema has always suggested. Not coincidentally, these works represent the influence on cinema of two popular music practices: the ubiquitous re-mixing that has emerged from hip-hop culture and the group composition typical of many rock bands. Abigail Child (also a poet, critic, and scholar) has had an influential career as an experimental filmmaker since the mid-1970s when she turned from professional documentary work to the creation of independent films focusing on gender, sexuality, class, and the critical possibilities of montage. Recycling found footage from a wide variety of sources, such as porn, industrial films, and home movies, and progressing cinematic techniques often associated primarily with the historical avant-garde of the early twentieth century, Child has created an oeuvre of incredible beauty and continuing social relevance. Her films are shown at major art museums and in experimental cinema venues and can be obtained through a variety of distribution channels. Is This What You Were Born For?, the series of short films Child created in the 1980s, underscores her exploration of interdisciplinary collaboration and these endeavors have had on her work. Michael Gordons award-winning career as a composer has resulted in a variety of notable intermedia collaborations, including for example operas with diegetic film components progressing beyond the more familiar application of projection as scenery and non-narrative music performances incorporating video. Gordon is a founding member of the highly regarded new music organization Bang on a Can, a group dedicated to facilitating the composition and performance of new music, often with an interdisciplinary dimension and independently of conservative academic contexts. Decasia, Gordons internationally celebrated collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison, is a symphony for full orchestra paired with a montage of archival nitrate footage in various states of intriguing and evocative decomposition. The final version of the film, edited to fit the live recording of the symphony performance, was featured in the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Decasia synaesthetically elucidates subtleties inherent to myriad generative tensions: progress/tradition, memory/time, darkness/illumination, and mini-malism/totalism.
IF Rep. Luis Gutierrez gets his way, Americans will soon be engaged in another bare-knuckled brawl over the future of U.S. immigration policy. On December 15, the Illinois Democrat unveiled a “comprehensive” reform bill that would create a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants who are residing in the United States illegally. Dozens of House members have signed on as cosponsors. Should President Obama and Democratic leaders launch an aggressive push for the legislation, we can expect a replay of the high-octane immigration battles that erupted in 2006 and 2007. Indeed, the bickering this time around could be even more raucous because of the weak economy. (Last time, the national unemployment rate was below 5 percent.) A few days before Gutierrez introduced his bill, Pew Hispanic Center released an extensive study of young Hispanics–those aged 16 to 25–and their uneven assimilation into mainstream American society. Roughly two-thirds were born in the U.S., and about the same proportion have Mexican ancestry. An estimated 22 percent are illegal immigrants. The Pew study found that Hispanic youths appreciate the value of a college degree, believe that hard work pays off, and aspire to have successful careers; but it also highlighted social and educational trends that are hindering Hispanics upward mobility–an issue that should be central to any debate over immigration reform. Pew reckons that in 2008, more than half of young Hispanics had family incomes under 200 percent of the federal poverty level, compared with 38 percent of all youths and 29 percent of non-Hispanic white youths. While foreignborn Hispanics had significantly higher poverty rates than their native-born counterparts, 21 percent of young Hispanics from the third generation and later belonged to poor families, compared with 13 percent of young non-Hispanic whites. These income gaps are fueled by parental and educational disparities. In 2007, the birth rate among Hispanic women aged 15 to 19 was 82 per 1,000, which was nearly twice the birth rate among all women in that demographic. Hispanics lag well behind the general population when it comes to finishing high school: The dropout rate among Hispanics aged 16 to 24 is 17.2 percent, compared with 9.3 percent among non-Hispanic blacks and 5.7 percent among non-Hispanic whites. That is a result of the staggeringly high dropout rate (32.9 percent) among first-generation Hispanic immigrants. Close to a third of Hispanics aged 16 to 25 can identify a past or present gang member among their family and friends. Once again, there is a divide between the foreign-born and native-born–but its not the divide you might expect. Native-born Hispanic youths (especially those of Mexican descent) are actually much more likely to know a gang member than are young Hispanic immigrants. Theyre also more likely to get in fights, carry weapons, and be questioned by the police.

FEW women like being snapped in a bikini – and for Linda Ralph, at nearly twenty stone, it was her worst nightmare. But as she gritted her teeth and urged husband Nick to take the photo, she knew posing in her cossie was her best chance of shedding the weight that was ruining her life. Linda, 49 – now down to just over 10st – says: “I had to be brutally honest with myself about how I looked. I knew the image of my near-naked body would spur me on to lose the weight I so desperately needed to. It was the start of an amazing photo diary recording Lindas weight loss, with the help of a strict diet and a gastric band op in October 2008.

The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today announced the designation of Air Transat to operate scheduled international air services between Canada and Jamaica.
“I am extremely pleased that we have been able to enhance our air service arrangements with Jamaica,” said Minister Kent. “This designation will play an important role in strengthening the people-to-people links between our two countries and contributing to prosperity in both countries.”
“Todays designation highlights Canadas continued action to provide more options for Canadians when choosing an air carrier to Jamaica,” said Canadas Transport Minister John Baird. “Jamaica is Canadas 13th-largest bilateral air travel market, and this new designation will facilitate new air services from cities across Canada, including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec and Halifax.”
Under Canadas international air transportation policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for designation to operate scheduled international air services. This designation was made possible by the 1985 Air Services Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Jamaica, as amended in 1987.
The Government of Canada is proud of its record in providing more choices to Canadians for their international air travel. Since January 2006, the Government of Canada has negotiated open, new or expanded air service agreements with nearly 50 countries:

WASHINGTON — On Sunday, February 7, the country will commemorate the tenth annual
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It’s a day that reminds us that
HIV/AIDS is still a public health crisis in the US. And it’s a day when
communities and organizations across the country come together to
recognize the impact this disease has had on the African American
community.
African Americans make up almost half of Americans living with HIV/AIDS
today. Blacks represent 12 percent of the population, but account for
nearly fifty percent of new HIV infections. In their lifetimes, 1 in 16
African-American men and 1 in 30 African-American women will get an HIV
diagnosis.
These are not just startling statistics—these numbers represent people
we know and love: neighbors, friends, members of our families and our
faith communities. And it’s time that we as a nation take action: to
improve care and treatment for those who are HIV positive and to
strengthen our prevention efforts to stop the spread of HIV.
President Obama has made domestic HIV/AIDS a priority. He has set goals
of reducing HIV incidence, increasing access to care and improving
health outcomes, and reducing HIV-related health disparities. His 2011
budget includes more than $3 billion, an increase of $70 million, for
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health
Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to enhance HIV/AIDS
prevention, care, and treatment. The budget also focuses on HIV testing
among high-risk groups, including men who have sex with men, African
Americans, and Hispanics.
PUBS are charging up to 60p MORE for a soft drink than a pint of beer, a Sunday Mirror survey reveals. A pint of standard bitter is cheaper than an equivalent amount of non-alcoholic drink such as cola and lemonade in almost HALF of Britains pubs. One city centre bar was charging pounds 2.60 for a pint of orange juice – when its bitter was just pounds 2. The massive mark-ups on non-alcoholic drinks were last night condemned by health campaigners. At the Crown in Birmingham city centre, we were charged pounds 2.30 for a pint of lemonade – 31p more than a pint of Pedigree bitter and 15p more than a pint of Carlsberg lager. At the Newt pub in the citys Stephensons Street, we paid pounds 2.13 for a pint of orange juice – 23p more than its Marstons bitter.

SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO)
(PINKSHEETS: SANYY) today announces the launch of its professional Air
Washer Plus(TM), an air purification system using electrolyzed water technology to treat air to
suppress airborne pathogens such as germs and
bacteria as well as volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), to reduce airborne pollen and allergy-causing dust, and to quickly
eliminate unpleasant odors in the office or other public space.
The professional air purification system safely and effectively
purifies over 20,000 cu.ft. per hour of indoor air, uses proven
electrolyzed water technology, and comes with an automatic salt water
dispenser for easy maintenance and efficacy.
The Air Washer Plus employs electrolyzed water technology tested and proven
effective in suppressing airborne germs, bacteria, odors, allergens and
mold through third party certification institutions including the Research
Triangle Institute (RTI), a respected research firm based in North
Carolina. With similar cleansing effects for air applications as found in
other applications such as swimming pool sterilization systems and
zero-detergent cycle washing machines, it literally “cleans the air with
the power of water.” More than 99% of germs are suppressed after a single
pass through the disinfectant element with the electrolyzed water.
Able to treat large volumes of air in a short time period, the professional
air purification system is recommended for a number of applications
including commercial office spaces, municipal and government buildings,
schools, pharmacies, health clinics, doctor office waiting areas, airports,
retail stores, hotels and residential complexes.
The professional Air Washer Plus(TM) will be available through select
channels of distribution that focus on creating healthier living and work
environments for employees, customers and family members beginning
mid-January 2010, with a suggested retail price of $5,599.99.
SALT LAKE CITY — The foothills along the Wasatch Front may be dusted with snow, but the heat of summer will bring the threat of wildland fires, and not everyone is shouldering the cost it takes to fight them. A legislative bill that may wind it way through the session that begins next Monday seeks to infuse some equity into the cost of fighting wildland fires. Counties in control of unincorporated areas have paid into the states wildland suppression fund to help buffer the expensive price tags attached to putting helicopters and airplanes in the skies to reach rugged terrain. “Every year we have seen an increase in urban interface development throughout the state and with that comes an increase in the need for fire suppression costs,” said Dick Buehler, state forester.

People who want to get serious about SEO for a site that they administer need to create an account at Google Webmaster Tools. This will give them access to some great analytics tools as well as configuration and diagnostics tools that report on how Google and their sites interact. There is also a tool for uploading a site map directly to Google. A site map gives Google information about pages and content on your site that Google might not otherwise discover through the robot crawlers that index the web. Standard site maps are written in the XML file format, which can be created with a simple text editor. Google Webmaster Tools has information on how to organize the XML code. There are many modalities for embedding video in webpages, and the Google bot might not understand that your page is displaying a video. Submitting a video site map is a way for you to tell Google that video is on a particular page. You will have to prepare a video site map XML file that points Google to each video on your site. The world’s favorite family game brand continues to introduce
innovative game play in 2010
EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. — In 2010, the 75 year tradition of buying, selling and negotiating
properties in the quest to own it all gets a modern makeover with the
introduction of MONOPOLY: Revolution Edition. The new edition
reinvents the traditional MONOPOLY game with a new look, featuring a
round game board, standout packaging, electronic banking, music and
sound effects.
“The new MONOPOLY: Revolution Edition continues Hasbro’s
tradition of providing new and revolutionary entertainment options for
families,” said Jane Ritson-Parsons, Global Brand Leader for MONOPOLY.
“As MONOPOLY has truly become the world’s favorite family game brand,
and is a part of pop culture, we are pleased to celebrate our
anniversary by offering new MONOPOLY entertainment experiences for
families around the world.”
In 1935, Parker Brothers began selling MONOPOLY, a property trading
game, which would quickly become a cultural phenomenon. Seventy-five
years later, more than 1 billion people in 108 countries have played the
game designed by Charles Darrow and based on the streets of Atlantic
City, New Jersey. MONOPOLY: Revolution Edition features the
traditional streets of Atlantic City, but with property values more
reflective of today’s prices. For example, players collect $2 Million
when passing “GO” instead of $200. Keeping track of the millions
changing hands during game play is an electronic unit that serves as
banker, die and music player. MONOPOLY: Revolution features clips
of hit songs from five decades, including “Umbrella,” “Bad Day” and
“Drive My Car,” and sound effects throughout the game that bring a
contemporary new spin on the classic family favorite.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] MAY I HAVE YOUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION PLEASE!” Small guy, big mouth: Hes maybe 15, black, skinny kid, but his voice fills up the noisy New York City subway car and then some. “I am selling candy! I got Snickers! I got Peanut MMs! I am trying to make some money! This isnt for school, this isnt for a basketball team, this is for ME! So I can get more candy and MAKE MORE MONEY!” The straphangers appreciate his no-malarkey sales pitch and his entrepreneurial spirit. He does a bit of business, and a few people just give him a buck and skip the candy. His name is Will, and he is not turning down a dollar. But its a tough hustle: Accounting for the cost of his product and his subway pass, it takes him about three hours to earn $20 free and clear, an implied wage of $6.67 an hour–well under minimum wage. On the other hand, its tax-free, and he sets his own hours. Will wants to go to college–and then what? “Be an independent businessman.” Hes already that, and, if persistence really does pay, hes going to do fine for himself. Theres a whole weird little economy on the subway, from candy hustlers like Will to the Chinese ladies who sell pirated DVDs of movies that have just opened in the cinemas. There are acrobats and mariachi bands, good old-fashioned panhandlers, poets, preachers, and percussionists. Its all part of the famous entrepreneurial bustle of New York. But stay on that No. 4 train a few more stops, north of Harlem and into the Bronx, and that entrepreneurial energy evaporates. Not far from the Kingsbridge Road stop is the Eighth Regiment Armory, a fantastically out-of-place 575,000-square-foot brick castle. Its been a lot of different things over the years–barracks, homeless shelter, boat-show venue, a pre-creepified set for Will Smiths I Am Legend–but it currently is vacant, as are a lot of buildings in the Bronx. Passing by, late on a weekday morning, is a local who calls himself “C,” a black man as sturdily built as the armory itself. C very much wants a cigarette. This is a problem, because he is not currently in funds, in no small part because he does not have a job. In fact, at 35 years old, C has never held a job. His friends, acquaintances, known associates (C is a little foggy on whether hes on probation or parole, but hes got some known associates): no jobs, never really had them. His father? Do not ask C about his father. In fact, the only people C can think of who have jobs are women: His mother worked, the mother of his children works. He did know a woman who was dating a taxi driver once. C says he would like to work but is more of an independent businessman. He describes the informal work he has done as “this and that,” and says he would like to “have his own place,” a bar or a nightclub. But dont expect to see him selling candy on the No. 4 train anytime soon. Asked about the recently defeated plan to convert the gigantic fortress that looms over his neighborhood into a shopping mall, C says he hasnt heard about it. If the plan had gone through, Manhattan-based developer Related Companies would have received about $50 million in tax subsidies for a project that would have created as many as a thousand retail jobs and, during its construction, employed a thousand or more highly paid union hardhats. But the city council killed the project. The Bronx delegation demanded that Related enforce upon its leaseholders a requirement that all of the jobs in the mall pay at least $10 an hour, plus benefits, much more than the prevailing wage in the Forever21-and-food-court racket, to say nothing of the $7.25 minimum wage. So a $300 million project, and a couple of thousand new jobs in a neighborhood that needs them, never happened. Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. infamously declared: “The notion that any job is better than no job no longer applies.” The New York Post pithily pointed out that when it comes to real jobs, Diaz has never had one–not in the private sector, anyway–and neither has any other member of the Bronxs city-council delegation: All are lifelong politicians, many of them having held elected offices or political appointments since their early 20s. Diaz himself has been an officeholder since he was 23 years old. Its good work, if you can get it. But theres not much other work to be had in the Bronx, where unemployment is currently at about 13.1 percent. Much of the Bronx is young and black or young and Hispanic. Nationally, the unemployment rate among blacks rose to 16.2 percent in the year-end numbers, while the rate for whites fell to 9.0 percent. For black youths, the numbers are startling: 50 percent for 16-19-year-olds, 26 percent for 20-24-year-olds. A study from the Community Service Society of New York puts actual work-force participation among black men 16-65 years of age in New York City at about 50 percent, and the number for young black men nationwide is just 40 percent.

SALT LAKE CITY — Toyota owners looking for company-prompted repairs are flowing into Utah dealerships, but the real flood is expected to begin next week. “Were scheduling more and more appointments,” Mark Tetzlaff, spokesman for Menlove Toyota in Bountiful, said Friday, when the dealership performed repairs for about 30 customers. “Next week will probably be (an even) heavier week.” There are 2.3 million vehicles involved in the recall, which also was announced last month. That recall came just months after Toyota recalled 4.2 million vehicles because of gas pedals that could become trapped under floor mats, causing the vehicle to accelerate. Toyota has already begun installing a modified gas pedal in newly built vehicles at its U.S. plants that should alleviate the problem.

Harry Reid, according to Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, authors of a new book (Game Change) on the 2008 election, was an early supporter of Barack Obama. And one reason was that he spotted a racial winner: Obama was “light-skinned. with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” Blacks have been saying such things about one another for ages (hence the mordant rhyme, If youre brown, come on down; if youre black, stay back).

DANNY CIPRIANI will turn his back on big-money moves to France or Australia because he still wants to be a World Cup hero. The 22-year-old fly-half gave his strongest indication yet he will sign a new deal with Wasps when his current one ends in June. He said: “My ambition is to play for England again. If Im 30 and Ive not won 50 caps by then Ill kick myself.” The dream of running out at Englands first-choice in New Zealand at next years World Cup still burns brightly in his heart. He also refuses to give up on the task of winning over sceptical team manager Martin Johnson.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The stone faces of four former United States Presidents stare out from Mount Rushmore. Elizabeth Lee is planning a trip to this world-famous monument in South Dakotas Black Hills. Most visitors shoot Mount Rushmore with cameras. But Lee and her co-workers will shoot it with laser beams. Their goal is to create a three-dimensional model of the site, using computers. Lee is a project director at CyArk, an organization that makes digital models of the worlds monuments. These sites, like Egypts pyramids and Indias Taj Mahal, have a special place in history and culture. Over time, weather, tourists, and natural disasters can wear down or destroy these treasures. Thats why experts like Lee want to create digital models of the worlds monuments before they are beyond repair. This way, damage to the sites can be monitored over time and repairs can be planned accurately. Whats a monuments number one enemy? Everyday weather. “Water is really the chief cause [of ruin],” says John Stubbs, who works at the World Monuments Fund in New York. It can strike as rain, floods, or even humidity.
The VMX-250 System consists of two RIEGL VQ-250 „Full
Circle”-Laser Scanners, which combined can achieve 600,000
measurements per second, enabling an extremely fast, efficient and
highly accurate 3D mapping of highways, streets, railroads, and the
like. The system configuration further comprises the latest, modular
IMU/GPS unit.
The revolutionary RIEGL technologies „Echo Signal
Digitization” and „Online Waveform Analysis” result
in excellent multi-target detection, even of 3D data of objects which
are obscured by physical entities in the foreground (fences, vegetation,
etc.). This opens new capabilities for the processing and transformation
of the measured data into a 3-dimensional computer model.
„Effort for installation and starting up the VMX-250 is limited to a
minimum. The compact and light design of the measuring unit allows it to
be mounted onto any commercial car roof carrier, it is connected to the
control unit (located inside the car) with a single cable, and can
easily be operated via touchscreen” said Nikolaus Studnicka, RIEGL’s
International Sales Manager.

SEATTLE — DRS, Inc. (OTCBB: DRSX) was incorporated in November of 2006 as a Nevada
Corporation by Daniel Mendes, the current President, and Daniel Guimont.
On August 1, 2007, George Guimont stepped in as Secretary/Treasurer with
his over 30 years of experience in the drywall industry to help lend
guidance to the growing company. With both executives possessing decades
of experience in both the construction and drywall industries joining
forces to develop DRS, Inc., they recognized what is no less than a
massive market opportunity created by both huge real estate construction
growth AND the current political/environmental trend toward being
“green,” clean and carbon footprint neutral.
Roughly 40 billion square feet of drywall board is manufactured annually
in North America, constituting up to 13% to 20% of new home construction
waste. This breaks down to roughly 40,000 tons of drywall (gypsum) waste
per day, all of which is being dumped in our landfills 365 days a year.
DRSX is committed to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and
to the process of scrapping and recycling gypsum wallboard.
These vast amounts of drywall present two major issues/opportunities.
First – contractors, construction companies, and developers do not have
a convenient, cost-effective manner in which to dispose of all of this
waste, and second – the waste creates a huge stress on our environment.
DRSX addresses both of these issues by providing removal/cleaning
services combined with its high-margin recycling business. The company’s
already-established infrastructure is efficient, effective, streamlined
– and poised to go national; already being one of the largest drywall
recycling businesses in the Pacific Northwest region. It is anticipated
that in the coming years, legislature will legally require the disposal
of drywall waste, although there is already a huge push in today’s
heightened “green” environment to address this growing problem.
DRSX’s rapid growth and expansion since inception has led it to build a
Drywall Finishing department. The company is proud to announce that in
only its third year of existence gross revenues (during a year which has
seen no less than a 70% DECLINE in housing starts) were over $3.5
Million. The new Drywall Finishing division has done a quick, three
quarters of a million dollars in revenues in less than its first year of
existence; recent large orders poise the company for much higher
near-term growth. DRSX attributes this quick expansion during a time of
economic pullback in the world markets, not to mention real estate in
general, to the current “green” and “carbon footprint neutral”
sociopolitical environment being experienced worldwide.
When given the opportunity, criminals will target whom they perceive as the weakest among us. And that notion could become even more apparent as Utah and the nation cope with the bursting of the real estate and economic bubbles. The Salt Lake office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Utah Division of Real Estate have compiled a list of the potential top five mortgage related rip-offs in 2010. Chief among them: a reverse mortgage scam targeting the elderly. Reverse mortgages can be a legitimate way for homeowners to take equity from their homes without a monthly payment, which can be especially useful to seniors who need supplemental income during retirement, she said. Unfortunately, con artists sometimes convince seniors they can live in a home for free, obtain a home loan under the occupants name and disappear with the equity, while leaving the victim to repay the mortgage.

The school board has decided that furloughs are the way to go to save jobs and deal with a $1 million shortfall for the 2010-11 school year. Other steps also must be taken, including increasing some class sizes, eliminating one custodian and one grounds/maintenance person and not filling some positions. “This is a bitter pill. but it will avert layoffs. Its not a long-term solution,” trustee Rich Raushenbush said at the Jan. 26 school board meeting. The furlough days will occur on Nov. 22-23, Dec. 17, Jan. 31 and June 17. The instructional calendar will be moderately affected but not compromised, Hubbard said. Five minimum conference days will be replaced with two full non-student days as part of the solution.
CimQuest INGEAR, a supplier of runtime free software development
solutions for industrial applications, has announced the availability of a
USB license key (dongle) that makes it very easy for users to move
developmental licenses between computers. The new key is available as an
option for developer editions of CimQuests NET.LOGIX , NET.ABLINK , NET.MBLINK and NET.GELINK class
libraries.
“Developers love the fact that once they build PLC communications or HMI s with our tools, they can run
them on as many other machines as they want, without paying additional
license fees; but they still have had to enter their license key whenever
they visited each machine for maintenance or debugging. This USB key now
eliminates the entry screens that might stand between them and their
applications, which means they can get their work done more quickly and
move on,” said Chuck Karwoski, president of CimQuest INGEAR.
The new CimQuest USB license keys are programmed with developmental license
information for any INGEAR.NET software title a user may own. They are
small, non-intrusive dongles that plug into any available USB port to
activate software for immediate use. They enable modification and debugging
of runtime deployed applications without the need to register or activate a
software-based license. The keys support Windows 32-bit and 64-bit
operating systems, without need of system-level drivers required for either
maintenance or operation.
To manage the process, CimQuest has added an “either/or” license dimension
to installed INGEAR.NET software. On launch, the INGEAR.NET library first
attempts to locate a key, and if it finds one, ignores the software-based
license, regardless of whether the software-based license is developer or
runtime deployment. If it does not detect a key, it defaults to the
software-base license.
The INGEAR USB License Keys are priced at $100 plus shipping and available
immediately, exclusively from CimQuest INGEAR. Buyers of NET.LOGIX , NET.ABLINK , NET.MBLINK and NET.GELINK
runtime versions, can order a key at the time of purchase. Current
INGEAR.NET users who are eligible for software updates and support, either
through a recent or an active Maintenance/Subscription plan, qualify to
obtain the USB License Key for the cost of the key. Users whose software
updates and support programs have lapsed must purchase a new
Maintenance/Subscription Plan in order to be eligible to buy a USB Key.
INGEAR.NET licenses can be obtained or upgraded via email.
SAN LEANDRO — Alameda County residents will find it harder to access county services. Road maintenance will be delayed. Safety improvements projects will be put on hold. Delays in environmental reports are likely. Backlogs may develop in processing assessment appeals. Those were pieces of a tough fiscal year Supervisor Alice Lai- Bitker described in her final State of the County District 3 speech Thursday evening, while also noting recent accomplishments and previewing some of her goals before she leaves office later this year. Despite the bleak news, the supervisor highlighted signs of recovery, particularly in her district, which includes San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Alameda, portions of Ashland, and the Chinatown and Fruitvale areas of Oakland. In San Leandro, for example, plans for large transit-oriented developments are moving forward, Lai-Bitker said.
When President Barack Obama delivered the State of the Union address, he said he understood the pain the American people were going through with respect to job losses and vastly reduced business growth. We have our own small business and I know that what the president proposed will have a huge impact. Innovations and investments to rebuild and improve the countrys infrastructure and new reforms to curb reckless practices will go a long way to jump start job growth, and also display to the people that the president and Congress care about the folks on Main Street. Lets hope our legislators are able to set their partisan politics aside for the common good.

Lots of zeros Wow, it is amazing how arrogant the California Democratic Party leadership treats the residents of this great state. Just two days after a nationalized health care system was thwarted by the Massachusetts senatorial vote, our Democratic leadership has introduced Senate Bill 810. This bill will cost the state $170,000,000,000. That is a lot of zeros. Come to think of it, we have a lot of zeros representing us in the state legislature. We need to throw all the bums out and go to a part-time Legislature. At least that way, they cannot do too much damage to this state. Throw the rats out. After all, you cannot spell arrogant and Democrat without rat.

Paul arrived with a gun, but Alison covered for Mick, then ran home. Mick resolved to carry out his plans at the wedding. Top Dog/Atlantic recording artist Uncle
Kracker has announced details of his upcoming US headline tour. The
Detroit-based singer-songwriter will kick off the “Happy Hour Tour” on
March 11th with a home state show at The Machine Shop in Flint, Michigan.
Dates will then continue through April (see itinerary below).
The tour comes as Uncle Krackers current hit single, “Smile,” continues to
explode across a variety of radio formats. The track — included on “HAPPY
HOUR,” Uncle Krackers latest album — has already reached #2 at Hot AC,
where it remains a Top 10 favorite. Whats more, “Smile” is now ascending
the airplay charts at both Country and CHR/Pop, where it is now climbing
the Top 40.
In addition, the tracks companion video clip is in rotation at VH1, where
it has been a fixture on the channels “VH1 Top 20 Countdown” since its
initial release last August. And as if all that werent enough, the “Smile”
ringtone is a Top 20 seller on this weeks Nielsen RingScans
top-downloaded master ringtones chart.
Produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Rob Cavallo (Kid Rock, Green Day,
Paramore), “HAPPY HOUR” sees Uncle Kracker continuing to craft his

known for his role as DJ in Kid Rocks legendary Twisted Brown Trucker
band, Uncle Kracker made a stunning solo debut with 2001s “DOUBLE WIDE.”
Fueled by the #1 smash, “Follow Me,” the album exploded onto the Billboard
200s top 10 on its way to 2x-platinum certification from the RIAA.

SALT LAKE CITY — Following the events surrounding the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, the U.S. government moved quickly to enact a law intended to “provide appropriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism.” This month, Congress will revisit three of the 16 provisions in the Patriot Act. It will be a time for citizens to weigh in on a law that originally involved little citizen input. Hermans points outlined the reasons why Americans should be aware of and care about what is happening at Guantanamo Bay and other detention centers where thousands of people are being held against their will because of vague associations with what government has deemed dangerous. The “dragnet,” as she calls it, has picked up people all over the world, as well as inside the United States, stripping them of their rights “for no reason.” “There is a tremendous cost to all these broad laws,” Herman said, adding that innocent people have been prosecuted for donating to the “wrong charities,” not knowing they were associated with terrorist agencies, however loosely defined that may be.

Time for reform The League of Women Voters of California strongly favors Senate Bill 810. Contrary to your editorial on Jan. 26, we believe this is exactly the right time to remedy our badly broken health care financing system. Californias budget crisis is directly linked to rising health insurance costs. Health insurance costs for teachers, police officers, firefighters and transit workers increase annually at rates much higher than wages.

Byline: HILARIE STELFOX PAIN-FREE labour without drugs sounds like every mother-to-bes idea of perfect childbirth. The reality is often quite different. But, says hypnotherapist Karen Riley, there really is a way to give birth painlessly. One of her clients, Jill Wilson from Brighouse, used hypnotherapy techniques during labour and to achieve a successful pregnancy. She was so inspired by her experiences that she is now training to be a hypnotherapist herself in order to help other women. Karen, an applied biology graduate and member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, specialises in working with women who are having difficulty conceiving and couples who want to learn techniques to assist a natural birth. She is the UK director of the HypnoFertility Foundation, which originated in the US, and leads workshops for other therapists. Karen, who lives in Outlane, said: “HypnoFertility works on a physical level. If you get very stressed about something and fertility treatment is very stressful then the bodys fight or flight reaction kicks in and the blood supply to the uterus is diverted to the legs and other parts of the body. “So, at the very time you need a good hormonal balance and a rich blood supply to the uterus, all these resources are going somewhere else.
POLICE officers are being given hypnotherapy to help them stop smoking – at the taxpayers expense. The West Midlands force put 140 officers through hour-long sessions. At least 65 per cent of them have quit and most of the others have cut down. And now the countrys biggest forces, including the Met, are looking at launching their own schemes. The once-a-month hypnotherapy sessions cost pounds 40 each, with police forces stumping up half the cost and the taxpayer the rest.

Q: My kids have allergies, so I am not sure how humid the air should be inside my house during winter and summer. What is a good target humidity level and what is the best and most efficient way to maintain it? A: There is not just one ideal year-round indoor humidity level. Controlling humidity lowers your utility bills by allowing you to set the furnace or central air conditioner thermostat down or up respectively. It also creates a healthier indoor environment. Although overly humid air creates the most health problems, some harmful microbes thrive better in very dry air. It is important to understand what RH actually means. Warm air can hold more water vapor (moisture) than cold air. If the air at 75 degrees has a RH of 50 percent, the air is holding 50 percent of the maximum amount of water vapor it can hold at that temperature.
Lets Users Quickly Determine Which Equipment They Need
LONG BEACH, Calif. — MovinCool® announced that it has created a convenient new online product
selector that saves visitors to its Web site time and effort in deciding
which MovinCool air-conditioning equipment best fits their particular
needs. The selector guides users through a series of easy-to-follow
steps that result in the recommendation of the most appropriate
MovinCool air conditioner and compatible accessories, along with the
manufacturer’s suggested list price for each piece of equipment.
“Customers constantly tell us our Web site is easy to use,” said John
Doran, senior manager, Commercial and Industrial Systems. “Now our new
online product selector will make it even quicker and easier for them to
find out the models and accessories they need, plus they can request a
quote online from their local MovinCool distributor,” Doran added.

NEW YORK — Attorney Advertising. The law firm of Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman

Board of Directors of Airgas, Inc. (“Airgas” or the “Company”) (NYSE:

On Friday, February 5, 2010, Airgas announced that it received an

STAMFORD, Conn. — InsightExpress, a leading digital marketing research firm,
released today Mobile InsightNorms through Q4 2009, including a
comparison of mobile media types and verticals. Benchmarked to the
impact of online advertising, these findings continue to show the power
of mobile as an advertising channel.
The study used norms developed in online ad testing as a benchmark to
draw conclusions around the performance of advertising on mobile
devices. InsightExpress compared the two using InsightNorms, the
company’s normative database containing over one thousand online ad
effectiveness campaigns and over one hundred mobile ad effectiveness
campaigns. Mobile InsightNorms are based on InsightExpress’ flagship
mobile brand effectiveness solution, Mobile AdInsights, which employs a
test/control design to measure the brand impact of mobile advertising
campaigns.
InsightExpress found mobile campaign norms were 4.5 to 5 times higher
than online norms against measures of unaided awareness, aided
awareness, ad awareness, message association, brand favorability and
purchase intent. “Online campaigns continue to offer exceptional reach,
flexibility and variety,” said Joy Liuzzo, Senior Director of Marketing
Mobile Research at InsightExpress. “However, the high levels of
engagement, the explosion in technical capabilities, low levels of
clutter and the novelty of mobile advertising all likely contribute to
increased brand impact.”
A comparison of three different mobile media types (Mobile Internet, SMS
and Mobile video) revealed that Mobile Internet is the current
powerhouse. Mobile Internet campaigns resulted in increases of 9
percentage points for unaided awareness, 9 percentage points for aided
awareness and 24 percentage points for ad awareness. SMS is also
effective at increasing upper level purchase funnel metrics such as
awareness measures. SMS campaigns generated increases of 5 percentage
points for unaided awareness, 10 percentage points for aided awareness
and 18 percentage points for ad awareness.
Mobile video is still emerging, but shows campaign impact on par with
SMS across most key brand metrics. This channel drove especially strong
results against brand favorability. With an increase of 13 percentage
points, compared to 12 percentage points for Mobile Internet and 7
percentage points for SMS, mobile video is demonstrating promise as a
way to move the important brand favorability measure.

ITS DISTURBING that Business Editor Drew Voros is so biased in favor of the petroleum industry. In two recent columns, Voros bemoans Chevrons veiled threats to close the Richmond oil refinery. He repeatedly blames the city of Richmond and environmentalists, but he ignores numerous facts that put the responsibility squarely on Chevron and the oil industry in general. Indeed, Voros admits that Chevrons actual plans were quite different, saying that the retrofit “. would have enabled it to process a larger variety of crude oil. “.” — Those living near the Chevron refinery have some of the highest rates of breast cancer and hospitalization due to asthma attacks in the state, among other health issues linked to the refinery. Yet Voros utterly fails to factor in (or even acknowledge) those costs.

Colette and I met in our first year of high school through my French class at Las Lomas in Walnut Creek. Since then, we have spent the last 30 years or so together through the ups and down and adventures that life undoubtedly throws your way. For instance, my daughter Arielle and her second son Andrew are nearly the same age so we went through the toddler years and teen years and now onto young adults together. When her husband was let go of his job after more than 20 years, I was the listener as she went through the worries of job loss and insecurity. A year or so later, it was me who needed consoling as I experienced a round of layoffs. We go through our lives with a wide circle of friends and acquaintances but so few that stay there for the whole ride. Many we meet through our jobs and we have our work in common. Others we meet when our children are little, but when the kids are grown there isnt always much there holding the friendship together.
MENS VOLLEYBALL: One night removed from a close five-set victory over the reigning national champions, the No. 3-ranked BYU mens volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (34-32, 30-26, 30-23) at the hands of No. 11 UC Irvine on Friday night at Irvine, Calif. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 7-4 on the season and 5-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Both teams picked up where they left off on Thursday, alternating points scored in the first set. Russell Lavaja recorded his second service ace of the night, capping a 3-0 BYU run, to give his team the 15-12 lead. Stewart, Stowell and Kevin Sagers provided kills, but the Anteaters fought back to tie the score at 27-27. UCI pulled ahead after a kill by All-American Carson Clark. It took both teams a combined five set-point attempts before the Anteaters claimed the 34-32 win. UCIs momentum continued in the second set, as it led by as many as eight points. Coming out of a BYU timeout, Stewart knocked down back-to-back kills, followed by attacks from Kent Tuttle and Futi Tavana, allowing the Cougars to climb back to within four at 20-16. Another kill by UCIs Clark brought up set point for the Anteaters, while the Cougars attempted a late comeback. Stowell hit an ace, which capped a 3-0 run, but it was too late, as Clark converted his 10th attack of the night allowing UCI to go up two sets to zero.

SOMEONE ONCE SAID that raising kids is the hardest thing youll ever do. Without discounting the difficulties of maintaining a healthy marriage, I would have to agree. Society demands so much from our kids today that its a wonder theyre not all in therapy. It doesnt help that they get hours of homework a night on top of the pressure to volunteer for service work and excel in sports. Using real-life stories and interviews, Abeles reveals just how stressed-out our students are today. Several East Bay schools figure prominently in the film, including Oaklands Bishop ODowd High School. TEEN TALK: My column on missing my college-aged daughter spurred lots of reaction from readers. Many moms said they felt the same way — that there was a void when their son or daughter returned to school after the holidays. But reader Joanne Hall sees the humorous side of her sons return to UOP in Stockton. “I think what I might miss the most is his funny and endearing way of phoning me at 2:30 a.m. (on a work night) to yell at me for locking the front door because he forgot his key when he went out with his friends.” One things for certain — no matter how old they get, theyll always be our kids.

Business Deal is Slap in the Face to Local Environmentalists
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — “It’s an outrageous slap in the face,” says longtime Charlotte County
Commissioner Adam Cummings. “For years we fought Mosaic’s efforts to
expand strip mining in the Peace River Basin. We spent $12 million doing
it. Now the Tampa Bay Rays want to put the Mosaic name on our sports
center. It’s as if Mosaic is going to get the naming rights for Florida
Field and change its name from the Swamp to the Clay Pit because
that is what they do to natural wetlands.”
The dispute centers on the Tampa Bay Rays need to acquire a sponsor for
the Charlotte County Sports Park. The County allowed the Ray’s to sell
naming rights. The County will receive $75K annually from the agreement.
The Rays propose to sell call the park, “Mosaic Field.”
“For those of us who know the environmental damage and the threats to
our water supply which this company causes, it’s a disgrace,” said Sue
Reske with the Greater Charlotte Harbor Group of the Sierra Club.
“Mosaic’s latest water permit request is for 3 times the amount which
all 250,000 of us downstream use each day. It’s simply outrageous for
the Rays to ask Charlotte County, which has been working to reinvent
itself as a green community, to consider selling our primary public
symbol to this greedy polluter.”
“It’s indisputable that the Peace River basin is suffering from the
effects of wall-to-wall phosphate strip mines,” said Dennis Mader,
President of 3PR, an environmental group working to protect the Peace
River Watershed.

NORWALK, Conn. — The Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF) today announced its new
responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of the U.S. GAAP Financial
Reporting Taxonomy applicable to public issuers registered with the U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The FAF and Financial
Accounting Standards Board (FASB) will assemble a small team of
technical staff dedicated to maintaining the taxonomy and will work
towards the release of the next taxonomy update in early 2011. Today’s
announcement is the culmination of several months of discussions between
the FAF and the staff of the SEC.
The U.S. GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy is a list of
computer-readable tags in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL)
that allows companies to label precisely the thousands of pieces of
financial data that are included in typical long-form financial
statements and related footnote disclosures. The tags allow computers to
automatically search for and assemble data so it can be readily accessed
and analyzed by investors, analysts, journalists, and the SEC staff.
FAF Chairman Jack Brennan stated, “The FASB team assigned to taxonomy
maintenance will work closely with the SEC, investors, issuers,
accounting firms, and other stakeholders to develop updates that are of
the highest quality.”
The FAF’s maintenance activities will be focused on updating the
taxonomy for changes in U.S. GAAP, best practices in taxonomy
extensions, and technical enhancements.
The 2009 taxonomy currently in use by SEC issuers was developed by XBRL
US, Inc., an independent non-profit organization with research,
development, and education programs facilitating the widespread adoption
of XBRL for tagging business reports across all business domains to aid
investors and other users. The FASB provided technical accounting
standards support to XBRL US during the development of the 2009
taxonomy, and expects to continue cooperative interactions with XBRL US
going forward.

A FEW months ago, a professor e-mailed with a simple question: What are the great conservative novels? He was preparing a course on the history of American conservatism and wanted to include some fiction on his syllabus. I proposed a few titles, but his question lingered in my mind. So I asked readers of NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE for their suggestions. I also canvassed several experts on American literature. Hundreds of ideas poured in. Here is the result: a list of ten great conservative novels, all written by Americans since the founding of the conservative movement in the 1950s. Lists such as this are always (and ideally) debatable. Yet these choices represent something of a rough consensus. Feel free to add them to your own reading syllabus. –JOHN J. MILLER 1. Advise and Consent, by Allen Drury (1959): “It may be a long time before a better [novel about Washington] comes along,” noted Saturday Review on the publication of Advise and Consent. The first work of fiction by veteran reporter Allen Drury won a Pulitzer, stayed on the bestseller lists for nearly two years, and became a well-regarded movie starring Henry Fonda and Charles Laughton. The book was loosely based on the case of Alger Hiss, and it sizzles with issues of loyalty and security. Half a century since its first publication, Advise and Consent still provides a penetrating look at Washingtons never-ending clash between ambition and integrity. The strength of the book is that even though its a political novel about a confirmation battle between the executive branch and powerful senators, it doesnt wear politics on its sleeve. Instead, Drury shares the conservatives preference for studying people, with their vices and virtues, before their stated ideologies. His novel exhibits a firm appreciation for the checks and balances at the heart of the American constitutional order as well as a sophisticated view of human nature. Even now, Advise and Consent remains a page-turning thriller that both describes and celebrates the obfuscations, oratorical mannerisms, and etiquette that are designed quite deliberately as speed bumps in the paths of the statist behemoth. That is just one reason it remains a book that every student of the U.S. Senate should read– as well as any student of American literature. 2. Midcentury, by John Dos Passos (1961): Midcentury is more than just a great conservative novel. Its one of the undiscovered classics in 20th-century literature. Dos Passos returns to the unique style he developed in his acclaimed U.S.A. trilogy, where multiple stories intersect with real-life headlines and portraits of the rich and powerful. His themes are the great issues of the 1950s: the Cold War and the aftereffects of the New Deal. Midcentury uses both fiction and history to show how Communists and organized crime corrupted labor unions, when they were at the peak of their power. The book also displays cultural foresight, especially in its portrait of a sneering James Dean titled “The Sinister Adolescents.” Dos Passos anticipates the emerging counterculture, which he interprets (controversially, but plausibly) in light of the subversion and loss of traditional institutions, as the “Greatest Generation” failed to match its bravery overseas with the efforts necessary to take on domestic adversaries. (”Why not resentful? Theres more to life; the kids knew it. Their fathers won a war but werent men enough to keep the peace, they let the politicians and pundits wheedle them into defeat; they let the goons pilfer their paychecks, too busy watching TV to resent oppression.”) Midcentury is even more remarkable because Dos Passos made his literary reputation as a socialist and is perhaps the only first-rate novelist to make a conscious journey from Left to Right over the course of his career. Never shrill, Midcentury bristles with insight and the hard-won wisdom of an exleftist who knows his history.

The growth of mobile broadband subscribers may be creating anxiety among
vendors fearing that substitution of fixed broadband will reduce the
market for access equipment. However, Ovum believes the impact of any
substitution will be limited in the long run. In a selected few markets,
mobile substitution will be one of several factors limiting growth of
fixed broadband subscribers, which will reduce the addressable market
for fixed broadband equipment. But in many others, the fixed broadband
market is already mature and the growth of mobile broadband will expand
the market for fixed backhaul equipment as mobile traffic increases. A
few fixed access vendors are adapting existing FTTH type of products
currently, but we expect over time that many more will venture into this
new market with an expanded and targeted access product portfolio.

strategies to increase revenue streams, cut costs and maximize product
lifestyles in a down economy,” said Jonathan Massoud, Program Director,

“The Leadership Test,” Timothy R. Clark, Oxonian Press, 2009, 104 pages, $12.95 Its easy to dismiss books like Timothy R. Clarks second offering, “The Leadership Test: Will You Pass?” Plug the word “leadership” into Amazon and enjoy sifting through an intense 58,000 titles. Clark, to his credit, has a meta-awareness of this and acknowledges early on that if every book on leadership was stacked on top of one another, the result would exceed Mt. Everest.
